Braid begyndte at høre rapporter om forskellige østlige meditationspraksis kort efter udgivelsen af sin første publikation om hypnose, Neurypnology. Han diskuterer først nogle af disse østlige praksisser i en række artikler med titlen Magic, Enchantism, Hypnoticism, etc., Historically and Physiologically Considered. Han trak analogier mellem sin egen praksis med hypnose og forskellige former for hinduistisk yogameditation og andre ældgamle spirituelle praksisser, især dem, der involverede selvbegravelse, menneskelige ønsker og tilsyneladende dvale. Braids interesse for disse praksisser stammede fra hans undersøgelse af Dabistān-i Mazāhib, “Religionsskolen”, en gammel persisk tekst, der beskriver en bred vifte af religiøse ritualer, overbevisninger og praksisser Østlig religion.
