Der er 78 kort i et standardspil tarotkort, som er opdelt i to dele: de store arkaner og de mindre arkaner. Den store arkana består af 22 trumf- eller billedkort, den mindre arkana indeholder 56 kulørlignende genstande (14 for hver kulør),der repræsenterer centrale punkter eller begivenheder i et menneskes liv.
Det er også værd at nævne, at der er tre typer af farver i et standardspil, som hver repræsenterer forskellige ting: pentakler (eller mønter), tryllestave og bægre.
